Engineers used ANSYS CFX to analyze Grand Central Terminal's ventilation system to see how improvements could be made effectively without major re-construction.
The trainshed typically experienced temperatures that were 15 degrees above ambient. Better ventilation in the trainshed would increase comfort for both passengers and MTA employess, and increase the operating life of trainis, which operate better at an ambient temperature.
Using ANSYS CFX, a parameter model of the entire trainshed region was analyized and airflow models were created, which matched observed airflow patterns. CFX was also used to design a new ventilation system.
